Dustin Fulton, EdD, assistant dean for Admissions in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, and Nicholas Hysmith, MD, assistant professor of Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases at UTHSC and medical director of infection prevention at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, have been selected as members of the Class of 2021 of the Memphis Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in Memphis.
Dr. Fulton has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He earned a master’s degree in Leadership and Policy Studies with a concentration in Student Personnel and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration, both from the University of Memphis. At UTHSC, Dr. Fulton has previously served as associate director for Student Affairs and Community Engagement and senior equity assurance administrator in the Office of Equity and Diversity. He has been with UTHSC since 2014.
Dr. Hysmith, who has been practicing medicine in Memphis for more than 10 years, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville before receiving his medical degree from UTHSC in 2010. He completed a Pediatric Residency at UTHSC, as well as a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases with UTHSC and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2016.
The annual 40 Under 40 features Memphians under the age of 40 who have made significant impacts on the city and their respective communities, businesses, and professions. This year, MBJ focused the “Memphisness” of the class, aiming to see what inspired the honorees to live in Memphis and improve the city and its communities.
Dr. Fulton is a native Memphian and proud champion of student rights, diversity and inclusion, and mentorship. Along with his work in the College of Medicine, he serves as an adviser for the Black Student Association at UTHSC and a member of the UTHSC Young Professionals Group Steering Committee. Dr. Fulton is also heavily involved in community service efforts, including being a St. Jude Hero, a former lead adviser for the Kappa League of Memphis, and an organizer and participant in efforts with the Mid-South Food Bank, the Family Safety Center of Shelby County, and Clean Memphis MLK Day of Service.

In 2015, he was recognized by the Memphis CARES Mentoring Movement for his work with Kappa League of Memphis. He also received a proclamation from the Shelby County School Board recognizing his volunteer efforts with the program. In 2017, Dr. Fulton was named to the Greater Memphis Chamber’s Young Memphis List.
Dr. Hysmith, who has been serving the Memphis community for more than 10 years, has stepped into the spotlight during the COVID-19 pandemic, serving as one of the leaders for the Le Bonheur and UTHSC Back-to-School Task Force. He has worked with Shelby County Schools and local medical personnel for recommendations and guidelines for a safe return to school.
Dr. Hysmith, who was also named a 2020 Healthcare Hero by the MBJ, has been involved in many other local roles, including research efforts, patient care direction, and roundtables and panels to help inform teachers, parents, and families on the virus. In this work, he has established blogs and podcast episodes to help spread awareness and knowledge on the coronavirus.
