Scott Strome, MD, executive dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, has been elected to chair the new Tennessee Rare Disease Advisory Council (TN-RDAC).
The TN-RDAC was created by the Tennessee General Assembly. Dean Strome, an accomplished head and neck cancer surgeon and researcher, was appointed to the council, along with other members, by Governor Bill Lee and legislative leaders. He was elected to lead the group at its first meeting. Dean Strome brings research and clinical experience related to rare diseases to the TN-RDAC.
“I am delighted to chair this committee dedicated to improving the diagnosis, quality, and quantity of life for Tennesseans with rare disease through improved awareness, access to new treatments and research,” the dean said.
The council’s mission is to help hose affected by rare diseases, through providing collaboration, education, support, and advocacy in accessing care and obtaining insurance for that care.
A rare disease is one that affects fewer than 200,000 people in the United States, according to the council.
