As we do more things online and on electronic devices, our risk of becoming a cyber attack victim increases. If you’ve seen the news lately, 2017 has been full of cybersecurity crime and breaches affecting small businesses and large corporations alike.
The total costs per breach for organizations are the highest in the health care and the financial services industry. By 2019 cybercrime will reach $2 trillion in global cost, a figure that has increased three times since 2015.
Information Technology Services at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, a champion member of the National Cyber Security Alliance, will offer classes as part of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month to ensure the campus is aware of best practices to lessen the likelihood of becoming a victim of cyber crime.
“ITS wants to make sure that every member of our campus is aware of the potential dangers and how to counteract those who want to cause us harm in the cyber world,” said Chris Madeksho, information security coordinator with ITS.
Many events are planned throughout the month of October, including a special presentation on Wednesday, October 25, with Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent Timothy Marsh. Marsh will facilitate a class from the perspective of law enforcement on cyber exposures, offering best practices on how to protect yourself from exposure to threats online.
Marsh works with the FBI Memphis Division’s Counterintelligence and Cyber Program, where he investigates cyber and counterintelligence law violations. He has worked more than 13 years in the field, including in the redevelopment of the Guardian cyber tracking program with the National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force.
“Having a special agent who deals specifically with cyber crime and counterintelligence come to talk to the campus shows the commitment UTHSC has to information security awareness and training,” Madeksho said. “Agent Marsh brings real-life experience and knowledge as to what is happening in government, health care, higher education, and financial institutions, all of which encompass UTHSC.”
