UTHSC College of Dentistry Presents Outstanding Alumni Awards

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Dentistry announces its 2008 Outstanding Alumni Awards to William D. Powell III, DDS (1967) of Knoxville and James L. Vaden, DDS (1969 ), MS (1972) of Cookeville.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Dentistry announces its 2008 Outstanding Alumni Awards to William D. Powell III, DDS (1967) of Knoxville and James L. Vaden, DDS (1969 ), MS (1972) of Cookeville. In recognition of their contributions to UTHSC, the dental profession and dental education, the awards will be presented at the annual Mid-South Dental Congress luncheon this Friday, February 29 at the Hilton Memphis.

William D. Powell III, DDS, MS, FACD, FICD

After serving on the dental school faculties at UTHSC (1969 -1970) and University of Iowa (1970 -72), Dr. Powell began a private practice in endodontics in Knoxville, Tenn. He is currently a clinical associate professor at the UT Medical Center, Knoxville, and the UT Health Science Center in Memphis.

Highly recognized in the profession, Dr. Powell has been named the Second District Dental Society Dentist of the Year and has received the Tennessee Dental Association Award for Distinguished Service, the Dr. Jack E. Wells Memorial Dedication to Dentistry Award, as well as the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Art and Science of Dentistry. He is a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy.

Dr. Powell has written articles for state and national journals and has presented numerous programs and clinics on the subject of endodontics, medical emergencies and dental benefits.

An active member in his professional organizations throughout his career, he has held leadership positions in the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontists, the American Board of Endodontics, the Tennessee Dental Association, the Second District Dental Society of Tennessee, the Tennessee Association of Endodontists, and the Southern Endodontic Study Group. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped, the Tennessee Dental Association Foundation and a past board member of the American Dental Association Foundation.

James L. Vaden, DDS, MS

Complementing his 35-year orthodontic practice in Cookeville, Tenn., Dr. Vaden began teaching part time at the UTHSC College of Dentistry, Department of Orthodontics in 1980. He is currently professor and chair of the Department of Orthodontics. From 1993 until 2000, Dr. Vaden was also an adjunct professor in the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan.

The author or co-author of 10 chapters in orthodontic textbooks, he has presented more than 100 major lectures, both nationally and internationally, and has published more than 55 articles in refereed journals.

In 1981, after joining the teaching staff of the Tweed Study Course, which is sponsored by the Charles H. Tweed International Foundation for Orthodontic Research and Education, Dr. Vaden became an assistant course director for the highly specialized training. He is a diplomate of The American Board of Orthodontics after serving as a director from 1991 until 2000 and as president during his last year on the board.

Currently serving as the editor of the “Tweed Profile, a publication of the Tweed Foundation,” he is also on the editorial board of “Seminars in Orthodontics.” He represented the specialty of orthodontics from 2004 until 2007 as a member of the Commission on Dental Accreditation and still serves as a consultant to the Commission on Dental Accreditation.
